The Midwife and The Baker is a bakery that draws a steady flow of locals looking for well-crafted pastries and hearty bread with a casual, neighborhood feel. Nestled on Independence Ave in Mountain View, it’s a spot that feels convenient for morning commuters and those grabbing a quick bite before nearby errands or meetings.

The place doesn’t offer ample indoor seating, but there is some outdoor seating that tends to fill up quickly on sunny mornings, especially over the weekend. The vibe here is practical and efficient; even when the bakery is busy, the staff moves things along smoothly, so wait times rarely drag. Expect a calm early-morning crowd — often solo visitors or pairs stopping by before work — while the weekend might bring a bit more hustle, largely from takeout customers stocking up on fresh bread and pastries.

The real draw is in their croissants and sourdough offerings. Many come specifically for the flaky, crunchy-edged almond croissants, which balance a generous almond topping with a buttery, crisp exterior. The bakery’s specialty twists — including the chocolate Frangi twist — provide a softer counterpoint. If you’re after savory, the ham and cheese croissant is a notable choice. Breads like rye and levain baguettes offer a solid option for those wanting something more substantial, often paired with cheeses or spreads from home.

Coffee here complements the food with well-made flat whites and cappuccinos, though be aware that on busy weekends, the coffee line can get quite long, encouraging many to just grab their pastries and go. This bakery fits well into a busy local routine — a quick stop for quality baked goods and coffee done right, without the fuss of a sit-down café atmosphere.

Overall, visitors who appreciate a straightforward, no-frills bakery experience with a focus on classic European-style pastries will find plenty to like. It’s not a place for lingering all day but ideal for a solid breakfast or midday pick-me-up in Mountain View’s evolving lifestyle corridor.

The almond croissants seem to be the most popular baked good. The taste is superb, the almonds are plentiful and the edges are perfectly crunchy. The chocolate twist is soft and tasty. We also got the olive bread, which was delicious with goat cheese. Overall, an excellent bakery.

Went on a Friday morning around 9 and there were not many people.(almost no line). Tried the Chocolate Frangi twist and everything crossiant. Both were fine. I had very high expectation due to the really high review scores but the bakery was not phenomenal. They were very crispy outside, actually can be too hard since they were cold. I wasn't so impressed by the texture Or taste. Overall good value for bakeries ($4 or 5 each)

I needed someplace for a quick breakfast before going to the Santa Clara county convention center and this place popped up. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I had a wonderful Everything Croissant and latte. Lots of options and the breads looked amazing! The outdoor seating filled up quickly but a lot of people took their delicious baked goods home with them. What a great find!

We had a great first visit to Midwife and The Baker. We were excited due to our love of croissants and having heard great things. We were not disappointed and everyone loved their choices. Despite it being a busy day, we didn't have to wait at all as they've got their systems down and are very efficient. Everything was delicious. I tried a cardamom croissant and can't wait to go back to try those other offerings.

Absolutely love their baked goods. Tried crossaints, ciabata and some others. Really flaky and not very sweet. Their cookies do tend to be on sweeter side - not for me. If you happen to go on weekends, coffee had a really long line so only ended up getting bakery food. It's mostly take out as they have limited outdoor sitting area.

This place has the kind of charm that makes you want to become a regular. The service is consistently warm, attentive, and friendly — you can tell the staff really care about the craft and the customers. Parking, unfortunately, is the only real downside. It’s limited and can be frustrating, especially during peak hours. That said, once you step inside and take a bite of what they’re serving, it’s easy to forget the hassle. The French baguette is the absolute standout. It’s everything you want in a baguette — crackly on the outside, fluffy yet slightly chewy inside, and bursting with the kind of deep, toasty flour flavor that only comes from using high-quality ingredients and a skilled baking process. You can taste the fermentation and craftsmanship in every bite. It’s the kind of bread that doesn’t need anything else — just tear off a piece and enjoy. If you’re a fan of naturally leavened breads or just appreciate well-made food, this place should be on your radar. Worth the detour, even with the parking woes.

Love it here. Savory pastries, friendly staff. For now the most favorite item is the almond croissant and scones. The pastries are so popular that there is a short line waiting even at 7.04am sharp over a Saturday morning! Definitely will come visit soon again.

It was our first time here and they did not disappoint! They close early so make sure to show up early. They don't have drinks everyday so keep that in mind as it's a third party vendor and they only open up Thursday-Sunday. They do have a water station. A coffee would have been amazing with the pastries. I wish it was closer to our hotel so we can stop by more often. We will definitely stop by here again on another trip.
